Sometimes, the most meaningful initiatives begin with a simple moment of reflection.
For Cathy Jelic and her family, the holiday season has always included a simple but meaningful tradition: new pajamas on Christmas Eve. It’s a small gesture, but one filled with warmth, comfort, and togetherness, something her family has cherished year after year.
That tradition took on a deeper meaning when Cathy, President of Action Day Schools and West Valley Dance Company, visited a LifeMoves community with her daughters. During that visit, she was struck by how something so familiar to her family—a clean, warm pair of pajamas—could mean so much more to children and adults experiencing homelessness. It became clear that something so simple could offer comfort, dignity, and reassurance, especially during the cold winter months. It was a powerful reminder that small acts of kindness can have an extraordinary impact.
Inspired by that moment, Cathy launched what has become our annual Holiday Pajama Drive, partnering with LifeMoves to support families staying at shelters throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. What began as an idea rooted in family tradition quickly grew into a community-wide initiative focused on giving back.
Each year, our families, students, staff, and even members of the surrounding community come together to turn compassion into action. As Cathy beautifully shared:
“Watching our families give is the best part. They turn pajamas into comfort and compassion for people who need both.”
This year, that generosity was truly felt. Thanks to the collective effort across our schools and studios, we are proud to share that we donated more than 850 pajamas, surpassing our goal. These donations will help make the lives of both children and adults warmer this winter—offering not just physical warmth, but a sense of care and connection during a challenging time.
The Pajama Drive reflects one of our core values at Action Day Schools and West Valley Dance Company: community. It shows what’s possible when families come together with empathy, purpose, and heart.
We are deeply grateful to every family, staff member, and community partner who participated. Thank you for helping us spread warmth, dignity, and compassion—one pair of pajamas at a time.
